More than 100 km of streets are lit, from the grand avenues of the Eixample to the lanes of the Gothic Quarter, every evening from late November until Three Kings’ Day on 6 January.

The lights are free, but they are spread across several kilometres, and December evenings are short and chilly. On foot, seeing the best of them takes three to four hours. From the seat of a private electric tuk-tuk, wrapped in a blanket, you can see the main avenues in about an hour. This guide covers when the lights switch on, where the best ones are, which tour to choose and how to plan the perfect Christmas evening in Barcelona.

Barcelona Christmas Lights at a Glance

When: late November to 6 January

Daily hours: from 17:30 until 01:00, and until 02:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves (2025 schedule)

Best streets: Passeig de Gràcia, Gran Via, Carrer d’Aragó, Plaça de Catalunya, Via Laietana

Main market: Fira de Santa Llúcia, in front of the Cathedral, until 23 December

Best time for photos: 18:00–19:00, while the sky is still deep blue

Easiest way to see them all: a private electric tuk-tuk from Gran Via 780, from €80 for up to 4 people

Book a Christmas Lights Tuk-Tuk Ride

When Do Barcelona’s Christmas Lights Switch On in 2026?

Barcelona City Council announces the exact date a few weeks before. For years the lights were switched on on the last Thursday of November: in 2024 it was 28 November. In 2025 the ceremony moved to a weekend and took place on Saturday 22 November at 18:30 on Passeig de Gràcia. For 2026, expect the switch-on in the second half of November. We will update this page as soon as the date is official.

The switch-on night is the most crowded evening of the season and traffic in the centre is restricted. For a calmer experience, come on any of the following evenings: the lights stay on every night until 6 January.

Sunday to Thursday: 17:30 – 01:00

Friday and Saturday: 17:30 – 02:00

24, 25 and 31 December, 5 January: 17:30 – 02:00

These were the 2025 hours; the schedule rarely changes much from year to year.

Why See the Christmas Lights by Tuk-Tuk

The best Christmas lights in Barcelona are on long, wide avenues: Passeig de Gràcia, Gran Via, Aragó. You’ll start in the last light of the day, see the city switch to its night colours during the blue hour, and finish just in time for dinner. Evening slots in December go fast, especially the week before Christmas, so book a few days ahead.

The Best Streets to See the Christmas Lights

Every year the main avenues get new designs, often by local artists and design studios, while dozens of neighbourhood streets, the 39 municipal markets and more than 50 fountains are lit as well. These are the highlights.

Passeig de Gràcia

The star of the season and the place where the lights are officially switched on. Look out for the façade of Casa Batlló, which usually runs a short light and music show every half hour in the evening, the giant Christmas baubles on the Hotel Majestic, and Gaudí’s La Pedrera at the top of the avenue. Passing it slowly in a tuk-tuk, you see both sides of the street at once, without fighting the crowds on the pavement.

Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes

One of the longest avenues in Barcelona and one of the main streets with its own new lighting design each year. It’s also where your tuk-tuk ride starts, at Gran Via 780.

Carrer d’Aragó and Rambla de Catalunya

Aragó is a busy avenue that gets a brand-new design and looks best from the road. Rambla de Catalunya, running parallel to Passeig de Gràcia, is calmer, with lights strung through the trees and café terraces with heaters: a good spot for a hot chocolate after your ride.

Plaça de Catalunya and Portal de l’Àngel

The centre of the city. The El Corte Inglés department store on the square is famous for its Christmas façade and decorated windows. From there, Portal de l’Àngel, the busiest shopping street in Barcelona, leads down to the Cathedral and the Christmas market.

Via Laietana

The avenue that cuts through the Old Town down to the sea.
